The Firm of Ronald Cornell Faniro, Architects, AIA, Inc. is the recipient
of the Top Award from the Ohio Parks & Recreation
Association for the MillCreek Metroparks Kirk Road Trailhead on the Lake
to River Bikeway. The project entailed integrating two early
20th century stone maintenance garages puchased from Mahoning County into
a outdoor pavillion, education center and point of respite on the Mahoning
County section of the bikeway. A companion depot structure and loading platform
harmonizes with the original structures and ties the project to the history
of the railroad track bed which now serves as the Bikeway.
Congratulations, Ronald!

Thursday, February 12
| The Youngstown Historical
Center of Industry and Labor was the elegant setting for the 49th Annual
Meeting and Design Awards banquet of the AIA Eastern Ohio Chapter.
Eighty people attended the event. The award recipients were selected
from among 15 entries submitted by four architectural firms; The 4M
Company, Hanahan/Strollo & Associates, Inc., Olsavsky Jaminet Architects,
and Ricciuti, Balog & Partners Architects. |
The Chapter makes it a point to hold its annual dinner at a different location each year to recognize the area's many interesting buildings, says Walter Van Scoter of Hanahan/Strollo & Associates. Typically, the event is planned by the incoming president, who, this year, is Art Morris, and a committee made up of John DeFrance, Mollie Christoff, Sue Douglass, and Melissa Jenoff. Last year's dinner was at the restored B & O Station, also in downtown Youngstown. |
The Honor Award was given to Hanahan/Strollo &Associates,
for their design of the Wayne County Justice Center in Wooster, Ohio.

| Designed by renowned architect Michael Graves with support from local firm Olsavsky/Jaminet, the museum, located on Wood Street, provided a fitting backdrop for the elegant sit-down dinner. Prior to dinner, a scavenger hunt led attendees through the museum in search of artifacts including Civil War cannonballs and Idora Park ticket books. Marty Hanahan, wife of architect Mark Hanahan, won the scavenger hunt, spotting all ten items on the list. |

The Gold Medal Award winner was Gary Balog. Accepting the award, which is given for excellence in architecture, Balog said much of his life's foundation is built on things he learned while away from the drawing board. "I've learned the importance of faith, of family, of being a true friend, of being kind. And I've been blessed to be in an environment where people put a high value on good work". Balog thanked his wife, Lorraine, and daughters Megan, Olivia and Rachel, who attended the dinner with him. In nominating him, Balog's colleague of 26 years, Paul Ricciuti, said "He is one of the truly gifted designers, not only in the AIA Eastern Ohio area, but in the entire state of Ohio." Balog related the difficulties of helping clients to envision more creative possibilities during the planning stages of projects. However, it's this bargaining process that makes the work challenging and produces dynamic results, said Balog. "This is where the best ideas come from. You can have an exchange that might be intense at times, but it ends up getting the best results," he said. |

Outgoing president Perry Douglass gave the opening remarks and a moment of silence was observed for James Olsavsky of Olsavsky Jaminet and Chuck Schafer of Hanahan/Strollo, who passed away in 2003. |
