Wick Neighbors, Inc.,

American Institute of Architects

Eastern Ohio Chapter (AIAEOC),

and Rotary Club of Youngstown

are collaborating to sponsor

a design competition open to ALL.

 

This project will result in a BUILT

product. The sponsors will donate

services such as the production

of construction drawings (AIA donors), securing funding for the construction of the winning entry’s proposal (Rotary), and continuing to facilitate the processes making this community project possible (Wick Neighbors).  Youngstown State University will assume responsibility for permanent maintenance of said area upon completion of construction.  The winning entrant is not expected to be responsible for further work, except as an AIAEOC donor.

 

 

GUIDELINES

 



I.                 The PURPOSE of this Competition is to:


·        Explore hidden talents of our communities

·        Promote Harrison Field  as the keystone in the redevelopment of Smoky Hollow

·        Create a shared sense of place with the Smoky Hollow neighborhood and the Wick Avenue cultural, religious and educational corridor

·        Showcase successful partnerships in and around Youngstown

·        Intensify the sense of pride for those who live in the area, and display more of its assets for those who visit

 

 


II                LOCATION:  This project will result in proposals for a 3.55 acres of open area in Harrison Field in Smoky Hollow, Youngstown, Ohio--bounded by Walnut Street on the west, Carlton Street on the north, a new extension of Audubon created between Harrison and Walnut on the east, and an extension of Willard Street to Walnut on the south side of the site.

IV.       KEY COMPONENTS Requested in Design:

·        Built or Natural Amphitheatre for Performances

·        Historic/Community Marker

·        Water Feature

·        Space for Public Arts

·        Moderate Lighting for some Night Activities

 

 


V.              All SUBMISSIONS shall be mounted on a single side of  32" X 40"  foamcore board, which is available without cost at the Wick Neighbors’ office Presentation board shall show the project’s design philosophy and approach to site; proposed site plan; and series of images and/or drawings that convey your design solution. 

 

In addition, include a TEXT SUMMARY of your design solution, as well as any additional descriptions or information necessary to clearly convey your proposal.  This typed text document shall be no larger than one 8 ½" x 11" sheet, and mounted on the back of the foamcore. .  No deviation from submission format will be eligible for jury consideration.

 

SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE AT 5:00 P.M., MONDAY, MAY 3, 2004, at the Wick Neighbors office at 323 Wick Avenue, in St. John’s Episcopal Church, and must remain ANONYMOUS to the judges.  Include a concealed 8½" x 11" sheet of plain paper, inserted in the plain white business-sized envelope included in entry packet, and tape the envelope to the back of the presentation.  On the sheet include this information:     

A.   Name(s) of participant(s)

B.    Representative address

C.   Telephone Number including area code

D.   Email address

E.    Name of company or organization if submittal created by a team from one company

Any submissions with identifying information marked on the actual presentation or board, front or back, shall be immediately disqualified.

 

 

VI.   COMMUNITY JURY MEMBERS shall reduce number of submissions to 3-5 finalists, and shall be representatives of groups as follows:

VIII.  Three PRIZES shall be awarded at the Wick Neighbors’ annual meeting, held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 343 Via Mt. Carmel, Youngstown ,  at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2004.  First Prize: $500; Second Prize: $250; Third Prize $150; A Winner’s Plaque from AIAEOC will be awarded at their Annual Meeting in November.

 

 

IX.   DISCLAIMERS:

·                    The winning entry in this competition will be used as a guide to the development and successful completion of Harrison Field.  The owner of the property and or the Development Corporation reserves the right to make adjustments to the original winning design entry.

·                    The Harrison Field Design Competition reserves the right for reproduction and display of all entries.  All submittals will be exhibited on the AIAEOC website at:

http://www.aiaeoc.com/.

·                    The winning entry shall forfeit the design to the American Institute of Architects, Eastern Ohio Chapter (AIAEOC), and permit AIAEOC to use the design for the creation of construction documents toward the end product of the completion of Harrison Field.
